AI Slop on YouTube Shorts: 21% of Clips are AI-Generated (2026)

Are you scrolling through YouTube Shorts and noticing something unsettling? A staggering 21% of the videos you encounter might just be what experts are calling "AI slop." Recent findings from Kapwing, a video editing company, reveal that as artificial intelligence tools, like OpenAI's Sora and Google's Veo, become more prevalent, the quality of content on platforms like YouTube is increasingly being compromised.

To understand the extent of this issue, Kapwing created a new YouTube account and analyzed the content it encountered while browsing YouTube Shorts. Out of 500 videos, an alarming 104 were identified as AI-generated, which constitutes about 21% of the total. Furthermore, 165 of those videos—representing 33% of the sample—were categorized as "brainrot." This term refers to nonsensical, low-quality video content that can detrimentally affect viewers’ mental or intellectual states while they watch.

The report also highlighted the top 100 trending YouTube channels across various countries, pinpointing those that specialize in this so-called slop content. Interestingly, South Korea stands out as a leader in slop consumption, boasting some of the highest rates of social media and smartphone usage globally. The top channels from this region have amassed approximately 8.25 billion views. Notably, a channel named "Three Minutes Wisdom," which showcases photorealistic footage of wild animals being bested by adorable pets, has garnered an astounding 2.02 billion views alone.

Following South Korea, Pakistan ranks second, with its leading slop channels collectively amassing 5.34 billion views. The United States comes in third, where the top channels have received around 3.39 billion views. The most popular channel in the US is "Cuentos Facientes," a Spanish-language content creator that has reached 1.28 billion views and is estimated to have earned about $2.66 million. However, it appears to be offline now.

But the encroachment of AI-generated content isn't limited to YouTube; as of May 2025, reports indicate that over half of the articles available on the internet are now produced by AI. This trend raises significant concerns about the authenticity and quality of information available online.

In addition to entertainment, the impact of AI slop extends into the workplace. Research indicates that 40% of employees in the US have encountered "workslop"—AI-generated work materials that mimic quality but lack the depth and substance necessary to effectively progress a task. Industries such as IT and consulting are reportedly among the hardest hit by this phenomenon.

While some platforms are attempting to address this influx of AI-generated content, TikTok has recently introduced features aimed at helping users identify and filter out AI-generated material from their feeds.

Isn’t it intriguing how rapidly technology evolves and influences our daily lives, often in unexpected ways? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!
