The 85th edition of this tournament is a two-stage affair. For the first two rounds, golfers will be paired with amateurs and play one round each on Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The final two rounds will be exclusively on Pebble Beach.
Both courses have consistently ranked as the shortest par 72s on the PGA TOUR since 2015-16. However, recent changes might shake up this status quo. Spyglass Hill's par-5 14th hole has been extended to 590 yards, and the green on the par-3 15th hole has been enlarged. Pebble Beach, too, has seen upgrades, including a new tee on the par-5 sixth hole, increasing its length to 6,989 yards. These changes are part of a long-term plan ahead of hosting the U.S. Open next year.
Pebble's greens remain the smallest on average at 3,500 square feet, while Spyglass Hill's targets are slightly larger at 5,000 square feet. All putting surfaces are prepared to offer a challenging 12-foot Stimpmeter reading, but Mother Nature has the final say, especially with the threat of rain and wind over the weekend.
And this is the part most people miss... Pebble Beach is notorious for its short drives, but when the weather turns wet, club selection becomes crucial to avoid the thick, 3-inch rough.
