A Journey into the Heart of Chicago: My Photojournalism Internship
I embarked on a thrilling six-month journey as Block Club Chicago's inaugural photojournalism intern, and what an adventure it has been! From the moment I stepped into this role, I was immersed in a world of storytelling, where every day brought a new chapter to uncover.
As a budding journalist, my passion for telling stories was ignited, but the practicalities of how to do so were a mystery. Thankfully, Block Club provided the perfect training ground. Each day was a whirlwind of early morning shoots, exploring hidden corners of the city I never knew existed, and late-night editing sessions. It was a crash course in the art of photojournalism, and I embraced it with open arms.
The essence of photojournalism, as Vanity Fair photographer Christopher Anderson once said, is being a 'professional noticer'. And that's exactly what I aimed to be during my internship. I learned from every Block Club reporter I worked with, each with their unique style and approach to community engagement and storytelling. Their methods were diverse, but the common thread was a deep connection to the communities they covered.
Chicago's neighborhoods are like microcosms of their own cities. Each has its distinct visual identity, from the vibrant German architecture and Puerto Rican murals of Humboldt Park to the elegant terra cotta arches of Chinatown. The streets, much like its people, have stories to tell, and I was determined to capture them.
My favorite part of the internship was the freedom to explore and capture these stories. Whether it was the bustling markets of Little Italy or the serene parks of Lincoln Park, every location had its unique charm. I felt like a true artist, painting with light and shadows, capturing moments that would otherwise be missed.
