Prepare to be transported to a unique fashion realm where mini golf and Regency England collide!
Stepping into the Chopova Lowena presentation in London was like entering a whimsical wonderland. The air was filled with an earthy patchouli scent, vintage umbrella stands transformed into quirky golf putter holders, and a vibrant Astro Turf mound that served as the perfect backdrop for the fall collection.
Laura Lowena, co-founder alongside her Central Saint Martins classmate Emma Chopova, revealed the inspiration behind their 2017 label: "It's all about the British Regency era and golf. We love exploring the intersection of sport and folklore."
But here's where it gets intriguing: do these fashion designers actually hit the golf course? "I'm more of a crazy golfer," Chopova admitted, referring to the British version of mini golf. And this unique sport-meets-fashion concept is what sets Chopova Lowena apart from the runways of Milan and Paris.
The Regency influence was evident in the collection's Empire waists, puffy sleeves, and intricate embellishments. The brand's iconic pleated carabiner skirt took on a new life, extended into tiered, floor-length versions, creating a fabric mashup that was both elegant and playful.
Lowena and Chopova delved deep into fashion history, researching the Regency era through books and online archives. "The V&A, British Museum, and Met collections online are incredible resources," Lowena raved. But they didn't stop there; they also raided their own fabric and upholstery stash, transforming them into sculptural corsets and zippered panniers that added a modern twist to traditional tartans and argyle patterns.
The collection was a vibrant, eccentric display, filled with quirky details and now, slogans too. The new Chopova Lowena Feelings intimates range features sweatshirts with bold statements like, "Smiles, giggles, tears, and frowns - I've got a case of the ups and downs."
So, what do you think? Is this fusion of mini golf and Regency fashion a stroke of genius or a swing and a miss? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
