A New Chapter for Conestoga College: The Stratford Campus Story
A Move-In Ready Surprise
Imagine walking into a brand-new campus, ready to embark on your educational journey, only to find out that the very building you're in might soon be up for lease! That's the intriguing tale unfolding at Conestoga College's Stratford campus.
The Stratford Switcheroo
Just a few months after welcoming its inaugural batch of students, the campus at 60 Erie Street, Stratford, is listed for lease. This move comes hot on the heels of its grand opening in September 2025, marking a significant shift from its previous location at 130 Youngs Street, where it stood proudly for over half a century.
A Quiet Listing, A Big Impact
According to Realtor.ca, the 22,000-square-foot property was discreetly listed online a mere month after its launch, on October 28th. The listing describes the space as "fully renovated and move-in ready," strategically located in the heart of downtown Stratford, offering exceptional connectivity to the city and its surroundings.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Leadership Changes and Property Shifts
Coinciding with this listing is a major shake-up in Conestoga College's leadership, with the recent retirement of John Tibbits, who served as the college's president for nearly four decades. As the college navigates these leadership changes, it also faces questions about its physical spaces and the impact on students.
A Student-Centric Focus
Currently, the Stratford campus accommodates upwards of 800 students, offering courses in business-marketing, personal service work, and early childhood education. While the doors opened in September, following extensive renovations completed in 2024, the college does not own the property.
A statement from Conestoga College reads, "The college routinely evaluates its portfolio of leased and owned spaces to ensure alignment with enrolment demand and strategic priorities. This includes exploring potential leasing or real estate adjustments. At this time, no decisions have been made regarding 60 Erie Street."
The Bigger Picture: Conestoga's Physical Transformation
The Stratford campus listing is part of a broader series of changes to Conestoga's physical properties. Other notable moves include:
- The Brantford campus on 274 Colborne Street has ceased all classes, transitioning to its new location at 50 Wellington Street, Brantford.
- The downtown Kitchener campus on 49 Frederick Street has also ended classes, moving to the 1 Young Street campus.
- The $90 million renovation project at the Guelph campus on 130 MacDonnell Street has been paused, with no further progress.
These moves come at a time when Conestoga College is facing a decline in enrollment, with a significant drop of 57% compared to fall 2023 levels, down from a peak of 40,726 students to 17,714 in the most recent fall semester.
Much of this decline can be attributed to changes in federal policy regarding international students, which have restricted access and reduced the number of international students across Canadian institutions.
Conestoga College, which previously boasted some of the highest numbers of international students, approving over 30,000 foreign students in 2023, has cited these declining numbers and lost revenue as the reason for recent property changes and staffing adjustments.
