Qatar Airways, a prominent Gulf airline, has temporarily halted all flights to and from Doha. This drastic measure was enacted due to the "massive operation" that was confirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Imagine being on a flight and suddenly turning back – that's exactly what happened to passengers on a Qatar Airways flight from Edinburgh to Doha. This Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to Doha, had to divert mid-air, turning back towards the UK after departing Edinburgh at 7:32 am. It was observed flying over Frankfurt, Germany at an altitude of 39,000 feet before its unexpected return, reportedly landing back at Edinburgh Airport.
But this wasn't an isolated incident. Flights from other UK cities like Birmingham, Manchester, and even Dublin, along with services from Heathrow, also experienced similar diversions, returning to their original departure points.
Qatar Airways confirmed the suspension via a statement on X, explaining that the "closure of Qatari airspace" necessitated this action. They've also acknowledged that even after resuming usual operations, delays are anticipated. And this is the part most people miss: The UK's Foreign Office has issued a stark travel advisory, strongly advising against all travel to Israel and Palestine. Furthermore, British nationals in other Middle Eastern countries have been urged to "immediately shelter in place." The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) detailed on its website that due to the "threat posed by escalation in the region," they recommend against any travel to Israel and Palestine. Consequently, Emirates flight EK024, scheduled from Edinburgh to Dubai, has been canceled. Emirates, the primary airline operating out of Dubai, stated that "due to multiple regional airspace closures," they have "temporarily suspended operations to and from Dubai."
