To qualify, candidates must be free from allergies or respiratory conditions like asthma, own a car, and have a smartphone. Once hired, they’ll undergo training led by a firm specializing in odour measurement. This training will teach them to differentiate between smells—factory emissions, industrial waste, sewage—and identify their origins. Armed with this knowledge, they’ll patrol targeted areas, sniffing the air and logging their observations in real time. ‘We previously identified companies responsible for emitting bad smells in an industrial area,’ Beltrame explained. ‘Now, we’re expanding our search to determine if those same companies are still the culprits or if new ones have emerged.’ Brendola’s location in the Po Valley—one of Europe’s most polluted regions—adds urgency to this effort. The valley, spanning Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna, is a hub of productivity but also a hotspot for pollution. ‘Being at the valley’s edge near the Alpine foothills makes this a massive challenge,’ Beltrame noted. ‘These areas drive economic growth but also pose significant environmental risks.’
Provincial initiatives are already in place to improve air and water quality, with strict protocols and hefty fines for rule-breaking businesses. But Brendola’s residents are taking matters into their own hands. Over the years, they’ve become more environmentally conscious, reporting issues like abandoned waste and foul odours. ‘Their vigilance allows us to act swiftly, preventing potential disasters,’ Beltrame said. ‘It’s a testament to their commitment to a better quality of life.’
The job postings, initially advertised before Christmas, received no applications—perhaps due to the holiday timing. But after reposting on Facebook, about a dozen people applied, mostly university students eager to contribute. ‘They’re enthusiastic and have the flexibility to balance this role with their studies,’ Beltrame added.
