The Las Vegas Raiders are officially handing the reins to Klint Kubiak! Fresh off a triumphant Super Bowl 60 victory with the Seattle Seahawks, where they bested the New England Patriots, Kubiak has confirmed his move to lead the Raiders. This news, first hinted at by top NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, marks a significant turning point for a franchise that's been searching for stability.
This isn't the first time the Raiders have sought a new head coach recently. In fact, it's their third coaching search since the 2021 season! Last year, they opted to promote Antonio Pierce from interim head coach to the full-time role in January 2024, bypassing a broader search. Now, with Kubiak at the helm, the question is whether he can steer the ship in a more successful direction.
Let's talk about the past. The Raiders' recent history hasn't been smooth sailing. Pete Carroll's tenure, for example, was a difficult chapter, marked by a 3-14 record and the mid-season dismissal of offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Adding to the on-field struggles, the team also faced criticism for how they handled the injury of their star player, Maxx Crosby, shutting him down early due to a knee issue. This situation left many wondering about the team's priorities and player relationships.
The Raiders are coming off consecutive seasons with double-digit losses, a streak not seen since the 2017-2018 seasons. Their playoff appearances have been few and far between, with only two since their Super Bowl 37 loss in January 2003. It's clear the task ahead for Kubiak is substantial.
But here's where it gets interesting: there are reasons for optimism! Kubiak inherits a team that, assuming they keep the pick, holds the No. 1 selection in the 2026 NFL draft. This gives them a prime opportunity to build around a foundational piece. And if they decide to trade Maxx Crosby, they could gain even more draft capital. Another promising young talent is Brock Bowers. Despite injuries limiting him to just 12 games in 2025, he shattered rookie records with 112 receptions and 1,194 receiving yards as a tight end. If he can stay healthy, he's a significant cornerstone for the offense.
And this is the part most people miss: the AFC West is a brutal division, featuring the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Chargers. This makes the Raiders' path to success even more challenging. However, this offseason presents a golden opportunity for a fresh start, a chance to add key players who could usher in a new era of success for the franchise.
Last season, the Raiders clearly prioritized offense, even pursuing Ben Johnson before he joined the Chicago Bears. Kubiak's extensive offensive background, including three years as an offensive coordinator with different teams and his recent role as passing game coordinator for the Super Bowl-bound San Francisco 49ers in 2023, makes him a strong fit.
In his first year as Seattle's offensive coordinator in 2025, Kubiak's system propelled the team to the third-most points in the NFL, culminating in their Super Bowl appearance. His impact is evident, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerging as an Offensive Player of the Year candidate within his scheme.
While the Raiders don't have a clear answer at quarterback yet, they're expected to address this crucial position through free agency or with that top draft pick. Indiana's Fernando Mendoza is being discussed as a strong possibility. Bringing in an offensive mastermind like Kubiak certainly bolsters confidence in their ability to improve on that side of the ball.
There's no question that this is a multi-year rebuild in Las Vegas. However, Kubiak's reputation and experience suggest he can make an immediate impact while the organization works to assemble the talent needed to compete for supremacy in the AFC West.
