The Next Galaxy Book Edge: A Performance Leap?
Is the future of high-performance laptops here? Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Book Edge laptop could be set to revolutionize the market with its potential performance boost. The key to this upgrade lies in Qualcomm's newly announced Snapdragon X2 Elite processor, which promises to deliver impressive speed gains.
Benchmarks Show Promise
Hardware Canucks recently tested the ASUS Zenbook A14, which features the Snapdragon X2 Elite (X2E-88-100). Although this was a pre-production unit, the results are promising. The chip scored 1,432 points in the Cinebench 2024 multi-core test, which is a significant 48.7% faster than the Snapdragon X Elite and 24.2% faster than Apple's M5 processor. In the single-core test, it scored 146 points, a 35.2% improvement over the Snapdragon X Elite, but fell short of the M5 by 27%.
Blender and Handbrake Tasks
The Snapdragon X2 Elite also completed Blender and Handbrake tasks faster than both the Snapdragon X Elite and M5. However, in DaVinci Resolve 20.3, the M5 remained ahead. These benchmark results suggest that the next-gen Galaxy Book Edge could offer a significant performance boost if it adopts the X2 Elite chip.
Qualcomm's X2 Laptop Processor Family
The X2E-88-100 is the second chip variant in Qualcomm's new X2 laptop processor family, built on TSMC's 3nm mode and powered by third-generation Oryon CPU cores. It features 18 cores in total, including 12 prime cores running up to 4.7 GHz and 6 performance cores running up to 3.4 GHz. Other features include a powerful X2-90 GPU and an NPU capable of up to 80 TOPS.
Samsung's Latest Galaxy Book Models
While we wait for leaks about the next Galaxy Book Edge, Samsung is preparing to launch its latest Galaxy Book 6, Book 6 Pro, and Book 6 Ultra laptops in the US this spring. These models use Intel's Core Ultra Series 3 processors. So, while the future of high-performance laptops looks bright, it's still unclear if the Galaxy Book Edge will be the first to embrace Qualcomm's new X2 Elite processor.
