Logan Thompson's Return Could Shift the Capitals' Momentum
The Washington Capitals have been holding their breath as their starting goaltender, Logan Thompson, has missed the last two games due to an upper-body injury. Fortunately, there's a glimmer of hope for his return. According to a report from Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post, Thompson participated in a light practice this morning, which was labeled as "very optional" for the team. NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti has indicated that we may not have a definitive update on Thompson’s status until tomorrow, as Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery has yet to address the media regarding his condition.
If Thompson is indeed on the verge of rejoining the lineup, both the Capitals and Hockey Canada would reap substantial benefits. The Capitals are currently in dire need of every point they can secure in order to enhance their chances of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Thompson's return to the crease would significantly bolster their efforts in securing victories. This season, he has maintained an impressive .912 save percentage along with a 2.46 goals-against average across 38 games. Moreover, for Hockey Canada, Thompson's availability could be crucial as he is considered a prime candidate for the starting goalie position at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy. While Jordan Binnington led Canada to triumph at the recent 4-Nations Face-Off, his performance in the NHL during the current season has been notably inferior compared to Thompson's.
Additional Notes from the Metropolitan Division:
* In other Capitals news, defenseman Matt Roy, who has been sidelined due to injury, also took to the ice this morning despite being placed on injured reserve just yesterday. Roy has been out for three consecutive games because of a lower-body injury, but he could potentially be back in action soon once his mandatory week on IR concludes. This season, he has been an integral part of the Capitals’ defense, averaging 20:46 minutes on ice per game, including 2:27 minutes per game while shorthanded. His quick return would be invaluable for Washington as they strive to secure a playoff berth.
* Meanwhile, Columbus Blue Jackets center Sean Monahan exited yesterday's game with an illness, clarifying that his departure was not due to any hit sustained earlier in the match, as reported by Aaron Portzline from The Athletic. Portzline noted that the Blue Jackets' locker room has been experiencing some health issues lately, with teammate Mathieu Olivier recently playing through similar ailments. Although leaving a game due to illness raises concerns, especially given Monahan's history with injuries, it’s a relief that his absence is expected to be minimal. So far this season, Monahan has contributed nine goals and 26 points over 50 games, following an impressive 2024-25 campaign where he netted 19 goals and amassed 57 points in just 54 games.
