The landscape of education is about to shift dramatically, and it’s not just a minor change—it's a fundamental rethinking of how we approach learning in Oklahoma. This week, students at Owasso Public Schools engaged in online classes, while their counterparts in nearby districts like Bixby, Inola, and Liberty-Mounds faced school closures, adding to their future academic obligations with make-up days. Conversely, larger districts such as Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Jenks, and Union opted for full shutdowns, highlighting a disparity in educational approaches during these unpredictable times.
However, starting next year, the situation will transform significantly. Under a new law enacted in Oklahoma, schools will no longer have the luxury of flexible virtual instruction options. Only two days of virtual learning will be recognized as instructional days, and this is strictly contingent on an emergency declaration from the Governor.
Mark Officer, the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in Owasso, expressed his commitment to adapting within the confines of this new legislation. "We will adjust our strategies to comply with the law, striving to maximize the effectiveness of the days we have available," he stated. He emphasized that there is stringent accountability for both students and teachers to ensure that meaningful learning occurs. "Our approach will resemble a traditional six-period day; students are expected to log in at the start of each class with their cameras activated, while teachers are required to provide live instruction for a minimum of 20 to 25 minutes, encouraging student interaction throughout the session."
Senate Bill 758 essentially strips away most virtual learning options beginning with the 2026-27 school year, marking a significant turnaround in educational policy.
