Get ready, Ottawa! Your garbage day might be a thing of the past, at least for a little while. Starting at the end of March, a significant chunk of households in Ottawa will experience a shake-up in their regular waste collection routines. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a fundamental shift tied to a brand-new collection contract that kicks off on Monday, March 30th.
So, what does this mean for you? Well, if you're one of the approximately half of Ottawa households that rely on curbside waste collection, mark your calendars! The city is rolling out new schedules, and for many, your familiar pickup day is about to change.
Don't panic about the frequency, though! The good news is that your waste will still be collected with the same regularity: weekly for your organic and yard waste, alternating weekly for recyclables, and biweekly for your regular garbage. And yes, those pesky holidays will still push your pickup back by a single day that week.
But here's where it gets a bit... different. Once this new contract is in full swing, some homes might find themselves with paper recycling being picked up two weeks in a row. This could mean your plastics and general garbage might be piling up for three weeks before collection. It’s a novel approach, to say the least!
To ease the transition, the city is offering a helping hand. From March 30th through April 24th, you'll be allowed to put out up to six items at the curb on your garbage collection day. That's double the usual limit, so hopefully, it will give everyone a bit of breathing room as they get used to the new system.
How will you know your new schedule? The city has assured residents that the new schedules will be readily available online. On top of that, they're planning to mail out notices in late February, so keep an eye on your mailbox! They're also promising at least one more physical waste collection calendar for the 2026-2027 period before they lean more heavily on digital listings.
And this is the part most people miss... Under the new contract, there's a specific requirement: leaf and yard waste must be kept separate from your green bin recycling. This might seem like a small detail, but it's crucial for the new system to work efficiently.
It's also worth remembering that a number of other changes to Ottawa's recycling program, including an expanded list of what you can recycle, already took effect on January 1st as part of a new provincewide recycling initiative.
