Rory McIlroy: Why The Players Championship Isn't the 5th Major | Golf Debate (2026)

Is the Players Championship Golf's Undisputed 'Fifth Major,' or Just a Really, Really Good Tournament?

Rory McIlroy, a golfer who knows a thing or two about winning big, has weighed in on a hot topic in the golf world: whether the Players Championship deserves the coveted title of the 'fifth major.' While he absolutely raves about the event, calling it 'amazing' from every angle, he's firmly in the traditionalist camp, believing the four established majors (The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship) are precisely where the focus should remain for men's professional golf.

But here's where it gets interesting... McIlroy, a two-time winner of the Players himself, was speaking to reporters ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. When asked to compare the Players to the majors, especially after his own career Grand Slam achievement, he offered a nuanced perspective. He acknowledged the Players is undeniably one of the best tournaments globally. He highlighted its appeal from a player's standpoint, the fantastic on-site fan experience, and the sheer quality of the golf course and venue. 'I think from a player perspective, it's amazing. I think from an on-site fan experience, it's amazing. It's an amazing golf course, location [and] venue,' he stated.

However, McIlroy's deep respect for the game's history leads him to believe that adding a fifth 'major' isn't necessary for the men's game. He even pointed to the women's game, which features five majors on its annual schedule (Chevron Championship, U.S. Women's Open, Women's PGA Championship, Amundi Evian Championship, and the Women's Open), and questioned the long-term impact of such a structure. 'I'm a traditionalist. I'm a historian of the game. We have four major championships. You know, if you want to see what five major championships look like, look at the women's game. I don't know how well that's [gone] for them,' he remarked.

And this is the part most people miss... McIlroy feels the Players Championship has a strong identity all its own. He even suggested it might have a more defined identity currently than the PGA Championship. 'But it's the Players -- it doesn't need to be anything else,' he asserted. 'Like I would say it's got more of an identity than the PGA Championship does at the minute. So like from an identity standpoint, I think the Players has got it nailed. It is an amazing tournament in its own right, and I don't think it being classified [as] a major or not a major makes it any more or any less.'

Adding to the conversation, McIlroy also offered his thoughts on the PGA Championship, suggesting it might benefit from returning to its traditional August slot as the season's final major, a time he described as 'glory's last shot.' Currently, it's held in May.

The debate about the Players' status has been reignited, particularly after the PGA Tour promoted the upcoming event with the tagline 'March is going to be major.' This move drew a sharp response from Phil Mickelson, a past Players champion, who definitively stated on social media, 'I've won it. It's not.'

It's worth noting that the Players Championship is renowned for its incredibly deep field, making it notoriously difficult to win. In its 51-year history, Scottie Scheffler is the only player to have achieved back-to-back victories (in 2023 and 2024).

Mickelson also pointed out that with LIV Golf players like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm unable to compete, the PGA Tour's claim of it being a 'major' loses some of its weight. McIlroy, however, seems content with the Players' standing. 'I'm still very proud to have won that tournament twice, as I'm sure all the other champions are,' he said. 'It stands on its own without the label, I guess.'

So, what do you think? Does the Players Championship truly rival the prestige of the traditional majors, or is its unique identity enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
