Schotty's unwavering relationship with Pickens remains steadfast, unaffected by contracts or tags.
Brian Schottenheimer, a seasoned coach, understands the dynamics of player contracts and their impact on team dynamics. Despite his desire for all superstar players to attend every meeting, practice, and game, he acknowledges that contract situations can disrupt plans.
This scenario mirrors his previous experiences as a position coach, coordinator, and now head coach. Schottenheimer witnessed it with CeeDee and Dak, and more recently with Micah Parsons. Now, it could involve George Pickens, who is projected to receive the franchise tag in the upcoming days.
"My relationship with GP remains unchanged," Schottenheimer asserted. "It didn't alter with CeeDee or Dak during their respective challenges. This is an integral part of the process and the business side of the game. I even spoke with CeeDee last night. It's all part of the journey."
If the Cowboys fail to negotiate a new contract over the weekend, Pickens is poised to receive the one-year franchise tag, valued at approximately $28 million for the 2026 season. This tag serves as a placeholder while both parties work towards a long-term contract, a preference expressed by both sides.
The Cowboys have until March 3rd to apply the franchise tag to Pickens or any other player. Schottenheimer remains confident, stating, "This will unfold as it should. GP is passionate about football."
Pickens had an exceptional 2025 season, earning his first Pro Bowl selection and a second-team All-Pro honor. He ranked third in the NFL with 1,429 receiving yards, 93 catches, and nine touchdown receptions.
