Sleeping in a Church Fellowship Hall in Christmas, Florida
A Tale of Two Nights: From Exhaustion to Excitement
After a sleepless night, I awoke feeling surprisingly refreshed, ready to tackle the day ahead. My energy levels were a pleasant surprise, and I was eager to explore the Florida Trail. Our plan was to stay at a church fellowship hall, a unique and welcoming spot for thru hikers. This would be my third time staying there, and I was thrilled to return for the second time this year.
I started the day with a delicious Chick-fil-A breakfast, fueling up for the adventure ahead. We then headed out, eager to hit the trail. The morning was filled with a mix of road walking and forest trails, with a delightful chat with my mom over the phone.
As we ventured deeper into the woods, I couldn't help but recall a previous encounter with a stranger who had made me feel uneasy. It was a stark reminder of the importance of trusting my instincts. Despite the unsettling memory, I felt a sense of growth and resilience, knowing that I had faced similar challenges before.
The trail took us through a lush forest, with raised boardwalks and swampy areas, a refreshing change from the road. We even stumbled upon a beautiful campsite under a massive oak tree, a perfect spot for a break.
However, the real test of our endurance came as we navigated through a swampy section of the trail. It was a slow and challenging journey, but we persevered, determined to reach our destination. We managed to find a dirt road that led us to the town of Christmas, a charming place with Christmas decorations and a welcoming atmosphere.
We resupplied at the local gas station, stocking up on food and drinks for the evening. The pastor, who had driven down to meet us, chatted with us briefly before heading out. We then made our way to the fellowship hall, exhausted but content.
Despite the late hour, we decided to call it a night, grateful for the warm and welcoming space. As we settled in, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the adventures that lay ahead. And as we drifted off to sleep, I knew that this journey was far from over.
