UA's $40 Million Makeover: A New School and a Brighter Future (2026)

A massive $40 million renovation is underway at the University of Alabama, paving the way for a brand-new School of Leadership and Public Policy! This exciting development, approved unanimously by the UA System Board of Trustees, signals a significant leap forward in the university's academic offerings and campus infrastructure.

But here's where it gets really interesting: The board has not only greenlit the substantial budget for transforming Farrah Hall into the new school's home but has also officially approved the academic blueprints for both bachelor's and master's degree programs. These programs are slated to welcome their first students in the fall of 2027, marking a crucial step in realizing the university's vision.

Interim Provost Lesley Reid highlighted the importance of these new degrees, stating they "mark an important step in transitioning the university and board’s vision for the school into tangible academic pathways for students." The goal? To cultivate principled, analytically-talented leaders and further enhance the university's reputation.

For those pursuing the bachelor's degree, expect a robust curriculum featuring courses in economics, ethics, statistics, political processes, and communications. Graduates will be exceptionally well-prepared for a wide array of roles, including policy development, strategic planning, risk assessment, government relations, regulatory affairs, and in-depth policy analysis.

The master's program dives deeper, offering specialized coursework in quantitative research methods, program evaluation, and applied policy analysis. This advanced training will equip students with the critical analytical and managerial skills needed to tackle complex policy challenges, transform data into practical solutions, and champion sound, evidence-informed decision-making. Potential career paths here include high-level analytical roles, policy design, strategic oversight, and risk mitigation.

And this is the part most people miss: The renovation of Farrah Hall itself is a significant undertaking. This historic building, originally constructed in 1927 as the law school's first home, currently houses the criminology and criminal justice department. The 63,000-square-foot space will undergo a complete interior overhaul, and an external stairway will be added. The estimated cost for this extensive project is a considerable $40,518,500, funded through a combination of bonds, reserve funds, and potential legislative appropriations.

Beyond the new school, the UA System Board of Trustees also gave the nod to other important campus improvements:

  • The budget for the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Facility and Student Veterans Center has been increased by 1.9%, bringing the total to $13 million. This 19,700-square-foot facility will include a physical training course.
  • The architectural design for the new Central Bryce parking lot has been approved. This $4.6 million facility will provide 420 parking spaces for faculty, staff, and visitors.

It's worth noting that the University of Alabama is a large institution, currently enrolling 42,360 students.

This expansion and renovation clearly demonstrate the University of Alabama's commitment to fostering future leaders and enhancing the student experience.
