Fiji's Western Schools Face Another Day of Closure
Fiji's Education Ministry has announced that schools in the western division will remain closed tomorrow due to the ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding. This decision was made in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office and divisional authorities, prioritizing the safety and welfare of students, teachers, and families.
The Ministry of Education's statement highlights the severe impact of continuous rain, causing flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities, unsafe road access, and rising river levels across the Western Division. Parents and guardians are advised to make their own decisions regarding their children's attendance, especially if they live in affected areas where roads and crossings remain unsafe.
The Ministry also reminds parents not to allow children to cross flooded roads, creeks, or rivers and to avoid unnecessary travel. School heads have been instructed to stay in close contact with their Management Committees and District Education Offices, assessing school grounds before resuming normal operations.
In contrast, schools in the Eastern, Northern, and Central Divisions will reopen tomorrow, allowing students in those areas to resume their academic activities. The Ministry reassures that further updates will be provided as needed, ensuring the well-being of the entire educational community in Fiji.
