A Major Talent Secured: Wests Tigers Lock Down a Future Star for Over $1 Million!
In a significant move for the club's future, the Wests Tigers have successfully inked a three-year deal with their promising young prop, Sione Fainu. This impressive contract, valued at over $1.1 million, is not just about securing Fainu's talent but also plays a crucial role in the club's strategy to retain his equally talented siblings.
Fainu, who was set to come off contract at the end of this year, has committed his future to the Tigers until the end of 2029. This agreement effectively takes the 24-year-old off the open market, a strategic win as the newly formed Perth Bears are actively building their roster for their inaugural NRL season in 2027.
The Tigers are now keenly hoping that Fainu's brothers, Latu and Samuela, will follow suit and commit to long-term extensions with the club.
Last season was a standout for Sione Fainu, who played in all 24 games for the Tigers, a remarkable achievement just a year after completing a development contract. This brings his total NRL appearances to 36.
The Fainu siblings have already achieved a significant milestone: playing first-grade rugby league together. In a memorable moment last year, all three brothers scored a try each during a victory against the Roosters.
Latu Fainu, who is currently in contention to partner Jarome Luai in the halves alongside Adam Doueihi, is contracted until 2027, as is his brother Samuela.
And this is where things get interesting... The Fainu family's footballing talent extends to a fourth member, former Manly hooker Manase. However, his future with the club is uncertain as he is expected to be released later this year, following a past incident.
Sione, Samuela, and Latu have all openly expressed their desire to finish their careers playing alongside each other. The Tigers are reportedly looking to secure Samuela and Latu before they become free agents on November 1st, which would be a massive coup if they can.
But here's where it gets a bit more complex... The club's immediate priority is now to re-sign the exciting fullback, Jahream Bula. Bula has a mutual option in his contract for next year. If the Tigers exercise it, he'll play for $900,000, but if he chooses to take it up himself, the figure drops to $800,000. The club is optimistic about reaching an agreement before the season kicks off.
And this is the part most people miss... It's highly probable that Jack Bird has played his final game for the Tigers. He's actively seeking a fresh start and is reportedly open to opportunities in the Super League, with Leeds being a strong contender for his signature in the United Kingdom.
